Why is a strong brand identity important?

Think of the strongest brands you will see online or on the street today. What are your favourites and, more importantly, how do they make you feel?

We see strong corporate brands with huge marketing budgets. Nike. TELUS (who I just finished a marketing contract with). McDonald’s.

Pay attention and you will notice a few things. First of all, the brand likely makes you feel something. When I see Nike I see athletic, strong, dynamic. TELUS makes me think friendly (cute critters!) and accessible. McDonald’s I feel like laughing with my friends as we share an order of fries.

The second thing you will notice is that every thing you see from these big corporate brands is 100% on point. Every digital ad, transit shelter, packaging, shopping bag and receipt is consistent with look and feel and tone.

No, you don’t have the marketing budget of a multi-million (or billion) dollar company. But you do have the tools to identify and present your authentic brand identity in a way that makes people get you and your business in an instant.

Your strong and effective brand identity is the visual and verbal expression of your brand that helps distinguish you from your competitors and create recognition and loyalty with your clients and prospects.

How do you find your brand identity? Your identity must reflect your true authentic self, and every piece of content that you put out has to reflect it.

Are you bold, loud and always pushing the limits? Or maybe you instil a sense of calm confidence and hope with your clients. Perhaps you’re the colourful, creative one who always sees things in a new way.

Consistency builds your strong brand and creates loyalty with your customers.

From there, your brand voice stems naturally from your brand personality, and it is your communication style—how you talk and write to your audience. Your voice should extend to everything from your website’s written content to your hashtags and even the words you use when talking face-to-face with clients.
